The Women’s Premier League 2025 (WPL) is set to begin on February 14, marking the start of another thrilling season of women’s T20 cricket. This year, the league will introduce a unique two-day opening ceremony featuring performances from Bollywood celebrities, setting the stage for an electrifying tournament.
The opening match will see defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) take on Gujarat Giants (GG) at the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium (Kotambi Stadium). Unlike previous editions, the opening ceremony of Women’s Premier League 2025 will unfold in a different format, taking place during the mid-innings break over the first two days.
Bollywood Stars to Add Glamour to WPL 2025
On the first day, Bollywood actor Ayushmann Khurrana will entertain the crowd during the mid-innings break of the RCB vs. GG clash. The following day, celebrated singer Madhubanti Bagchi will take the stage during the Mumbai Indians (MI) vs. Delhi Capitals (DC) encounter. Both matches will start at 7:30 PM IST, meaning organizers expect the performances to begin around 9 PM IST or earlier if the first innings concludes sooner.
Exciting Teams and Star Players
RCB, led by Indian star Smriti Mandhana, is aiming to defend their title with a power-packed squad that includes Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry, wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh, and bowlers Shreyanka Patil and Renuka Singh Thakur. The team made history in Women’s Premier League 2024, securing the franchise’s first-ever title in both men’s and women’s T20 competitions.
Their opponents, Gujarat Giants, have strengthened their squad significantly. GG made headlines in the Women’s Premier League 2025 auction, securing the two most expensive players—Indian batter Simran Shaikh for Rs 1.9 crore and West Indies all-rounder Deandra Dottin for Rs 1.7 crore.
On the second day, Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) will face off in a high-stakes battle. MI, led by Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur, will look to reclaim their 2023 title, while DC, captained by Australian legend Meg Lanning, will aim for their maiden WPL championship.
The final team in the five-team league, UP Warriorz, will be led by India’s spin-bowling all-rounder Deepti Sharma, following the withdrawal of Australian wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy.
