Vidarbha’s Fightback Led by Malewar and Nair in Ranji Trophy Final

by satyam

A costly mix-up denied Karun Nair a well-deserved century, but his resilient partnership with Danish Malewar powered Vidarbha to a commanding 254/4 at stumps on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy final against Kerala in Nagpur.

Early Setback for Vidarbha

Kerala’s seamers struck thrice early, reducing Vidarbha to 24/3 and putting them under immense pressure at the VCA Stadium. However, Nair (86) and Malewar (138 not out) took charge and launched a solid counterattack.

The duo put together a 215-run stand for the fourth wicket, displaying a mix of patience and controlled aggression. Their partnership consumed 414 deliveries across three sessions, stabilizing Vidarbha’s innings.

Nair’s Heartbreaking Run-Out

Just as they looked set to end the day unbeaten, an unfortunate run-out cost Nair his century. The dramatic moment unfolded when a delivery from Eden Apple Tom swung more than expected, slipping past the wicketkeeper Mohammed Azharuddeen and first slip.

Sensing an opportunity, both Nair and Malewar called for a run, but Rohan Kunnummal at second slip reacted quickly, firing a direct throw to the striker’s end. Nair, caught short of his crease, had to walk back on 86 off 188 balls (8 fours, 1 six). Frustrated, he threw his bat, knowing he had let go of a golden chance for a century.

Malewar’s Gritty Century

While Nair missed out, 21-year-old Malewar continued his impressive form. Batting at No. 4, he played the best innings of his young First-Class career, remaining unbeaten on 138 off 259 balls. This marked his second century in his maiden Ranji Trophy Final, following knocks of 75 and 79 in the knockout games.

Vidarbha in a Strong Position

Despite the early collapse, Vidarbha ended Day 1 in control, thanks to the resistance from Nair and Malewar. With wickets in hand and a solid foundation, they will look to push for a big total on Day 2.
