Veer Ahlawat Prepares for Dubai Desert Classic: A Major Step in His Career

After a thrilling runner-up finish at the Indian Open last year, Veer Ahlawat is now setting his sights on the prestigious USD 8 million Dubai Desert Classic. With his 29th birthday just around the corner, Ahlawat’s remarkable second-place finish helped him clinch the Indian Order of Merit title, securing his place on the coveted DP World Tour. Alongside Shubhankar Sharma, Ahlawat is one of only two Indians competing in this year’s Dubai Desert Classic, a tournament often referred to as the “Major of the Middle East.”

Turning Point in His Career

Reflecting on his journey, Ahlawat shared:

“Finishing second in India was a turning point. It not only secured the Order of Merit but also gave me the opportunity to play here in Dubai, with some of the biggest names in golf, like Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm. It’s a massive confidence boost.”

The Dubai Desert Classic, hosted at the iconic Emirates Golf Club, has always been a dream for Ahlawat. He has never played in the UAE before, even during his amateur career. As he gears up for this prestigious event, he adds:

“The event has always intrigued me, and many senior golfers I admire have competed here. It’s exciting to finally get my chance.”

A Warm Reception in Dubai

Since arriving in Dubai, Ahlawat has felt right at home. He spoke about the connections he’s made with people familiar with Indian golf:

“It feels almost like home, and I’ve only been here for a few days.”

The warm reception has only added to his excitement as he prepares for one of the biggest events of his career.

A Rising Star in International Golf

Ahlawat’s rise to prominence is part of a growing trend, as he becomes the third Indian to benefit from the partnership between the Indian PGTI Tour and the DP World Tour. This collaboration allows the winner of the Order of Merit to earn a spot on the international circuit. His impressive achievements include two titles and seven top-10 finishes, including a standout runner-up finish at India’s biggest DP World Tour event, the Indian Open.

His steady rise in international golf is proof of his talent and determination on the global stage.

Shubhankar Sharma: A Strong Contender

Meanwhile, Shubhankar Sharma, competing in his eighth Dubai Desert Classic, will be looking to build on his best performance in the event from last year, where he finished tied for 16th. With golf legends like Rory McIlroy gunning for a third consecutive victory, the competition promises to be fierce.

The Dubai Desert Classic is sure to be a thrilling event, and both Ahlawat and Sharma will be looking to make their mark on the world stage.
