At an altitude of 3,100 meters, where the air is thin, the girls of northern Pakistan are rewriting history. The landscape is rugged, with sparse trees and little grass, making it an unlikely place for a football tournament. Yet, since 2018, the village of Passu in Gilgit-Baltistan has hosted the Gilgit-Baltistan Girls Football League, bringing together players aged 14 to 21. Against the stunning backdrop of the Karakoram mountains, teams from remote villages come together to showcase their talent and challenge societal norms.

Sisters Karishma and Sumaira Inayat, hailing from the nearby village of Shimshal, founded the league out of their deep love for the game. Born in 1998 and 1995 respectively, their journey was not an easy one. The girls faced resistance, as access to sports for women in Pakistan is often restricted by cultural and religious norms. However, Hunza, where Shimshal is located, has a progressive Wakhi-majority population that values women’s education and equality. This provided them with the courage to push boundaries.
Challenges in Organizing the League
Bringing the Gilgit-Baltistan Girls Football League to life was no simple task. Organizers faced multiple hurdles, including:
