Shreyas Iyer, presently in the limelight as the recently appointed captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the IPL, has expressed his desire to return to the Indian national team for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. With the team announcement set for January 19, Iyer has made his intentions clear, reminding fans and selectors alike of his impactful performances in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
A Middle-Order Pillar for India
In an interview with ESPNCricinfo, Iyer highlighted his and KL Rahul’s critical contributions during the 2023 World Cup, where the duo formed several match-defining partnerships in the middle order.
“KL and I played an important role in the middle during the World Cup. It was just the final where we could not execute as planned. If I get the opportunity, I will be proud to represent India in the Champions Trophy and deliver similar results,” Iyer said.
Known for his adaptability, Iyer has emphasized his readiness to bat at any position for the team, making him a versatile option for the selectors.
Punjab Kings Captaincy: A New Chapter
Iyer’s appointment as the captain of PBKS for a record-breaking ₹26.75 crore in the IPL auction underscores his leadership capabilities. Reuniting with head coach Ricky Ponting, Iyer is optimistic about steering Punjab Kings to their maiden IPL title.
“I’m honored by the faith PBKS has shown in me. With a strong team and Ricky Ponting’s guidance, I aim to repay their trust and bring home the title,” he remarked.
Iyer’s leadership credentials include guiding the Delhi Capitals to the IPL final in 2020 and leading KKR to victory in the 2024 season. His domestic success this year, winning the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Ranji Trophy, and Irani Trophy with Mumbai, further cements his reputation as a proven match-winner.
Champions Trophy and India’s Middle Order Options
With India’s middle order still evolving, Iyer’s addition could provide much-needed stability. His ability to play spin and pace equally well, coupled with his leadership experience, makes him a strong contender.
The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee faces a tough task, with competition from the likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, and young stars such as Tilak Varma and Yashasvi Jaiswal for middle-order spots.
A Stellar Year for Shreyas Iyer
Iyer’s recent achievements:
- IPL 2024 Champion with KKR

His consistency, leadership, and flexibility as a batter make a strong case for his inclusion in India’s Champions Trophy team.
As India prepares to kick off their Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh in Dubai on February 20, Iyer’s hopes of a national team comeback rest on the selectors’ final decision.
