Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy Struggles Continue Amid Series Defeats

Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy Under Scrutiny Amid India’s Recent Struggles

Rohit Sharma’s captaincy struggles have become a major concern after India suffered consecutive Test and ODI series defeats against Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Australia. Despite leading India to victory in the T20 World Cup 2024, Rohit and newly appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir have faced a tough start in bilateral series. However, many still support his leadership. Among them is Sanjay Bharadwaj, Gambhir’s childhood coach, who recently called Rohit the best captain.

Bharadwaj’s Vote of Confidence in Rohit Sharma

During an interview on The Raunac Podcast, Bharadwaj compared the captaincy styles of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Gautam Gambhir, and Rohit Sharma. When asked to pick the best, he chose Rohit. He explained that young players enjoy playing under him because of his supportive and fun-loving nature.

“They (youngsters) tell me that he (Rohit) backs you a lot. It is a lot of fun playing with him. He himself is a fun-loving person,” Bharadwaj said. His words highlight Rohit’s ability to create a positive and relaxed team environment.

Recent Setbacks Under Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy

Despite this praise, Rohit’s recent performances as captain have raised concerns.

  • Test Struggles in Australia – India lost two Tests and drew one under his leadership. His own form also declined, scoring only 31 runs in five innings before missing the final match.
  • 0-3 ODI Series Whitewash vs New Zealand – India faced a shocking home series defeat just months after their T20 World Cup success.

What’s Next for Rohit Sharma?

Rohit’s future as India’s Test captain remains uncertain. However, he will lead India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. This tournament will be a critical test for both him and Gambhir. They must silence critics and bring India back to the top on the global stage.
