New Zealand head coach Gary Stead has confirmed that star batter Rachin Ravindra is still recovering from a head injury sustained during the first match against Pakistan in the ongoing Tri-Nation Series. Ravindra has been experiencing headaches for several days after a ball struck his forehead while he attempted a catch, delaying his return to full fitness.
The incident occurred in the 38th over of New Zealand’s match against Pakistan when Rachin Ravindra took a nasty blow while fielding. As a result, he had to leave the field immediately and has since been following the necessary medical protocols for recovery. Despite showing signs of improvement, he remains unavailable for selection, as confirmed by Stead.
Rachin Ravindra’s Recovery Progress
The 25-year-old batter was absent from New Zealand’s crucial victory over South Africa, a match that secured their spot in the series decider in Karachi. Although Ravindra returned to the nets on Thursday night, he has yet to reach match fitness.
Speaking in a video shared by BlackCaps on social media, Stead provided an update on the batter’s condition:
“The pleasing thing is that he’s progressing well. We’re following head injury assessment protocols at the moment,” Stead said.
He further elaborated that while Rachin Ravindra had experienced headaches for a few days post-injury, they have now started to subside. He took a positive step by returning to light batting practice on Thursday night, but he must still clear several hurdles before being declared match-fit.
“He hit a few balls tonight for the first time, which is good, but there are still a few more steps for him to go through before he can be considered fit for play,” Stead added.
Lockie Ferguson’s Fitness Update
Alongside Rachin Ravindra, veteran pacer Lockie Ferguson is also working on his recovery. Ferguson sustained a hamstring injury during the ILT20, and the team management is closely monitoring his progress.
“Lockie has had a couple of bowling sessions since his arrival. He increased his intensity tonight, and we are pleased with how he’s tracking,” Stead stated.
New Zealand is taking a cautious approach to player injuries, especially with the Champions Trophy fast approaching. Stead hinted that if any player has minor fitness concerns, the team will not take unnecessary risks.
New Zealand’s Upcoming Matches
New Zealand will play a warm-up match against Afghanistan in Karachi on Sunday before their Champions Trophy campaign kicks off against hosts Pakistan on February 19. The management remains hopeful that Rachin Ravindra will regain fitness in time to contribute to the squad’s crucial upcoming fixtures.
With his recovery showing progress, fans eagerly await Ravindra’s return to the field, as his presence will be vital for New Zealand’s campaign in the Champions Trophy.
