Pakistan vs. New Zealand – Champions Trophy Opener: Can Pakistan Overcome Their Inconsistencies?

The much-anticipated Pakistan vs. New Zealand Champions Trophy opener is set to take place on Wednesday, February 19, at the National Stadium in Karachi. The tournament kicks off with a high-stakes clash, as Pakistan looks to redeem itself after a recent five-wicket loss to New Zealand in a tri-nation series final that also featured South Africa.

Pakistan’s unpredictability has once again been a topic of discussion, especially after failing to defend a total of under 250 runs against the Black Caps at the same venue. This inconsistency continues to raise concerns as they prepare to face the same opponent in the opening game of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Aakash Chopra Highlights Pakistan’s Unpredictability

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra weighed in on Pakistan’s volatile performances, drawing parallels between the team and the nation itself. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra pointed out Pakistan’s long-standing struggles with consistency, especially in high-pressure situations.

“Pakistan’s weakness is not new. It’s been there for years. Yes, they are the defending Champions Trophy winners, but they tend to crumble under pressure. Chopra pointed out, “Let’s not forget, they were defeated by the USA in the 2024 T20 World Cup and couldn’t make it to the second round.”

Chopra further emphasized that Pakistan vs. New Zealand Champions Trophy will be a crucial test for the hosts, as recent poor performances in ICC events have increased the pressure on them.

“Pakistan is an unpredictable team. Their graph fluctuates—never steady. Just like their country, they experience highs and lows. That’s their cricketing identity. Can they break this cycle? That remains the biggest question,” he added.

Sarfaraz Khan Backs Pakistan to Shine on Home Soil

Despite these concerns, Sarfaraz Khan, who captained Pakistan to the 2017 Champions Trophy title, believes that the current squad is stronger than the 2017-winning team. He feels that playing on home turf gives Pakistan a significant edge.

“This team looks very strong, and home conditions give them an advantage. They know the pitches well, which will be a crucial factor. If we compare this team with our 2017 squad, the current lineup appears stronger on paper,” Sarfaraz told Cricket Pakistan.

The former skipper also praised Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman for their development since 2017.

“Once, Babar Azam was still carving out his role, but today, he stands as Pakistan’s premier batsman. Fakhar Zaman was a newcomer, but now he’s evolved into a seasoned player. These factors make Pakistan a formidable side,” he added.

Will Pakistan Break the Pattern Against New Zealand?

As the countdown to Pakistan vs. New Zealand Champions Trophy opener continues, all eyes will be on Mohammad Rizwan’s side to see if they can overcome their unpredictability and start the tournament with a win.

Will Pakistan’s home advantage and improved squad lead to success, or will their inconsistency cost them once again? The answer will unfold on February 19 when they take on New Zealand in Karachi.
