As the highly anticipated India vs Pakistan clash in the ICC Champions Trophy approaches on February 23 in Dubai, former Pakistan captain and head coach Moin Khan has issued a stern message to Pakistan’s players: Keep professional boundaries and avoid unnecessary friendliness on the field.
Moin’s Take on the India-Pakistan Rivalry
Speaking on a podcast hosted by actor Ushna Shah, Moin, known for his aggressive and tough-as-nails approach, expressed his displeasure over how modern Pakistan players interact with their Indian counterparts.
Watching Pakistan-India matches these days just leaves me puzzled—I can’t quite wrap my head around it. As soon as Indian players come to the crease, our players check their bats, pat them, and engage in friendly chatter. Our seniors always told us—when playing against India, give no quarter. Being overly friendly is seen as a sign of weakness.”
The Psychological Edge in Cricket
Moin, who played 69 Tests and 219 ODIs, emphasized that maintaining professional distance is crucial in high-pressure encounters. He recounted how his generation maintained fierce intensity during Indo-Pak matches, both on and off the field.
Back in the days of the now-defunct ICL, I always advised my players to steer clear of casual banter. Cricket is a mind game—when you get too comfortable with your opponents, you lose your edge and come under pressure.”
Pakistan’s World Cup Regret & Champions Trophy Aspirations
One of Moin’s biggest regrets from his playing days is Pakistan’s winless record against India in World Cups. However, he believes both teams are strong contenders for the Champions Trophy 2025, urging Pakistan’s squad to maintain focus and intensity.
Do you agree with Moin Khan? Should players keep things strictly professional, or is sportsmanship and camaraderie equally important?
