Mohammed Shami: The X-Factor in India’s Champions Trophy Campaign

With Jasprit Bumrah ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, India’s hopes will largely rest on the experience and skill of Mohammed Shami. The 34-year-old fast bowler, renowned for his impeccable wrist position and ability to generate seam movement, will have to lead India’s attack when they begin their campaign against Bangladesh in Dubai on February 20.

Can Shami Shoulder the Burden Alone?

Shami has always thrived under pressure. Even in India’s last two ODI World Cups, he outperformed Bumrah in terms of wickets, proving his ability to be a strike weapon. However, this time, the challenge is different—he is coming back from an injury, and his usual partner, Bumrah, won’t be there to share the responsibility.

With young Arshdeep Singh likely to open alongside him, Shami will have to deliver early breakthroughs to set the tone for India’s bowling unit. Former Indian pacer Laxmipathy Balaji believes that Shami’s experience will be crucial.

“For India to shine, Shami must deliver with the new ball. His first spell will dictate how India starts in every game,” Balaji explained.

Dubai Conditions Could Work in His Favor

Dubai has historically provided assistance to fast bowlers, with some seam movement and variable bounce. Shami’s ability to attack the stumps consistently and generate natural swing could be a major advantage. His control over reverse swing, especially in the latter stages of an innings, could also be a game-changer.

Beyond Wickets: A Leadership Role Awaits

Shami’s role won’t just be about taking wickets. As the most experienced pacer in the squad, he will also need to mentor young bowlers like Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana.

“Shami is the leader of the pack now. His 12-year experience in international cricket makes him the perfect guide for the younger bowlers,” Balaji emphasized.

A Make-or-Break Tournament for India’s Bowling Attack

With a history of injuries affecting key bowlers in ICC tournaments, India will rely heavily on Shami’s form and fitness. If he can strike early with the new ball and provide the necessary leadership, India’s path to reclaiming the Champions Trophy after 12 years becomes much smoother.

The question now is—can Shami deliver when it matters most?
