Matthew Kuhnemann Cleared of Illegal Bowling Action by ICC

The ICC has officially cleared Matthew Kuhnemann of an illegal bowling action after extensive testing in Brisbane. The decision allows the Australian left-arm spinner to resume playing in Australia’s upcoming Test tour of the Caribbean later this year.

Umpires had reported Kuhnemann for a suspect action during the second Test against Sri Lanka last month, putting his international career in doubt. However, after undergoing an independent assessment, the ICC confirmed that his action falls within legal limits, giving him the green light to continue bowling.

Bowling Assessment Confirms Clean Action

Kuhnemann traveled to the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane, where experts analyzed his bowling motion. The tests revealed that his elbow extension stayed within the 15-degree tolerance limit permitted under ICC Illegal Bowling Regulations.

“Kuhnemann’s action is legal, and he can continue bowling in international cricket,” the ICC stated in an official release.

Matthew Kuhnemann Shines Despite Controversy

Even as doubts surrounded his action, Kuhnemann played a crucial role in Australia’s 2-0 series win over Sri Lanka. The 28-year-old bagged 16 wickets at an average of 17.18, proving his worth as a key spinner in the squad.

Cricket Australia Backs Kuhnemann

Cricket Australia (CA) has thrown its full support behind Kuhnemann throughout the process. Ben Oliver, CA’s Executive General Manager of National Teams, praised his resilience and professionalism.

“We are happy for Matt now that this issue is resolved. He handled the situation well and showed great character. He has full support from Australian cricket and can move forward with confidence,” Oliver said.

ICC’s Bowling Action Rules

The ICC allows bowlers a maximum of 15 degrees of elbow flexion. Any bowler exceeding this limit faces mandatory reassessments and possible suspensions. Since Kuhnemann’s action meets the required standard, he can continue playing without restrictions.

With the Caribbean Test tour approaching, Kuhnemann’s return boosts Australia’s spin attack. He now has the chance to prove himself again on the international stage.
