Jadon Sancho’s Familiar Journey

by aishwarya

Jadon Sancho has seen this story unfold before, and he knows the cycle too well. Perhaps that’s why the former Red Devil quickly acknowledged Marcus Rashford’s exit from Manchester United. Aston Villa, under Unai Emery, secured the forward on a loan deal last week.

Much like Rashford, Sancho also left Old Trafford, with an obligation to secure a permanent move to Chelsea next summer. United’s squad overhaul didn’t stop there—Ruben Amorim’s management also facilitated Antony’s temporary exit. However, even if both rediscover their peak form, it seems unlikely that United will reconsider their futures at Old Trafford.

“Man United follows Sir Alex Ferguson’s ideology—prioritizing the club over individual players. This philosophy has led to the departure of several big names over the years.”

United’s Legacy in Question

United has let go of several marquee players in an effort to rebuild. However, despite these changes, the club still lacks a manager of Ferguson’s caliber or a squad brimming with dynamic players capable of restoring its past glory.

Ferguson ensured David Beckham’s exit in 2003 didn’t leave a void, just as he had Wayne Rooney ready when Cristiano Ronaldo left in 2009. The last time United reached a UEFA Champions League final was in 2011, under Ferguson. Sancho himself played in a Champions League final, albeit for Borussia Dortmund, after a loan spell last season.

“Rashford quickly adapted to Aston Villa’s philosophy under Emery, reinforcing the idea that United’s issues go beyond individual players.”

Is Manchester United Losing Its Appeal?

Players move on, managers change, yet United’s struggles persist.

Why do players thrive elsewhere after leaving Old Trafford while the club continues to falter in the Premier League?

Scott McTominay, after switching to Napoli, rediscovered his form and even earned the nickname “McTottaly” for his performances in Italy. Ander Herrera, Matteo Darmian, Ashley Young, and Romelu Lukaku all found trophy success in European football after leaving United.

“Who can forget Memphis Depay’s stoppage-time screamer that sealed Barcelona’s Spanish Super Cup victory?”

Will Rashford Return If Amorim Leaves?

The short answer? Unlikely.

Rashford’s relationship with manager Ruben Amorim seems irreparable. Reports suggest that even if Amorim were dismissed, the 27-year-old has no interest in returning to Old Trafford.

During United’s UEFA Europa League clash against Viktoria Plzen, Rashford was subbed off for Rasmus Hojlund, signaling a shift in the team’s attacking hierarchy.

Leaving Old Trafford: An Easy Decision

“Leaving Manchester United has never been easier.”

Before Amorim sidelined Rashford, the forward was already out of favor in United’s recent squad selections. In the last 12 matchday squads, Rashford was omitted 11 times. On the only occasion he was included—December 30—he remained unused in United’s 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle United.

So when Aston Villa came calling, Rashford didn’t hesitate.

“The decision was a no-brainer,” Rashford admitted.

He praised Unai Emery’s tactical intelligence and admired Aston Villa’s rapid progress this season.

“He’s a phenomenal coach, and what he has accomplished with this team is inspiring,” Rashford told Villa TV. “This squad has a real shot at making a deep European run, and I want to be part of something special. You can’t win if you don’t aim high, and my focus is on pushing for a strong league finish.”

A New Era at Villa Park

Aston Villa has strengthened its squad further by signing Marco Asensio on Monday. The former Real Madrid and PSG attacker has committed to Villa Park until the end of the 2024/25 season.

With Rashford and Asensio in the mix, Villa’s frontline looks more formidable than ever. Meanwhile, Manchester United is left scrambling for solutions, still searching for a way to reclaim its dominance in English and European football.
