Hardik Pandya to play in Vijay Hazare Trophy from Saturday

by Ganesh

A week after reports suggested that Hardik Pandya would skip the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT), the dynamic all-rounder has reversed his decision. In a surprise move, Pandya has joined the Baroda team and is set to make his first appearance in the tournament against Bengal on Saturday, December 28.

Led by his elder brother Krunal Pandya, the Baroda team is currently in Hyderabad and has made a strong start to the competition, securing victories against Tripura and Kerala in their opening matches. The upcoming clash with Bengal marks their third game in the league phase, following a five-day break.

Confirming Hardik’s participation, Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) secretary Ajit Lele said, “He had some personal issues which kept him out of the first few games. However, he has now joined the squad in Hyderabad and will be playing tomorrow.”

This change in plans comes after discussions with Baroda’s head coach Mukund Parmar, who emphasized the importance of Pandya’s presence for the team. “He is ready to contribute, starting from the Bengal match,” Parmar stated.

A Strategic Move Ahead of the Champions Trophy

Pandya’s return is significant not just for Baroda but also for Indian cricket, with the ICC Champions Trophy scheduled for February-March. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, have reiterated the necessity for players to actively participate in domestic tournaments to stay in contention for national selection.

Initially, Pandya was expected to join the VHT only during the knockout stages, which are set to take place in his hometown from January 9. However, his decision to participate earlier signals his intent to regain match fitness and prove his readiness for international assignments.

Balancing Workload with Expectations

Over the past 14 months, Pandya has exclusively featured in T20 matches, with 38 appearances spanning internationals, the Indian Premier League (IPL), and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). The Vijay Hazare Trophy will mark his return to the 50-over format since suffering an ankle injury during the World Cup last October.

In the SMAT, Pandya showcased his all-round capabilities, amassing 246 runs and taking six wickets in seven matches. His performances played a pivotal role in Baroda’s journey to the semifinals, reinforcing his value as a match-winner in domestic cricket.

With games against Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi lined up after the Bengal clash, Pandya’s return is expected to bolster Baroda’s chances in the VHT and provide selectors an opportunity to assess his form ahead of the international calendar.

As Baroda aims to maintain their unbeaten streak, all eyes will be on Hardik Pandya as he steps onto the field, blending personal ambition with the larger goals of his team and Indian cricket.
