West Ham Star Says He’s Mentally Strong and Ahead of Recovery Schedule
West Ham striker Michail Antonio has revealed he is “100 percent” confident of returning to football despite suffering a life-threatening car crash that left him with a shattered leg. The 34-year-old Jamaican forward shared the harrowing experience and his determination to get back on the pitch after his Ferrari collided with a tree on December 7.
‘I Could Have Died’ – Antonio Reflects on Horror Crash
In a candid interview with the BBC, Antonio said the crash nearly took his life. “I crashed into a tree,” he said.
“I still don’t understand how it happened. The police found me wedged between both seats in the car.”
Serious Leg Injury and Speedy Recovery
The accident resulted in multiple fractures to his femur, requiring surgery. Despite the severity of the injury, Antonio is making a swift recovery. “I’ve already surpassed expectations. I’m about three months ahead of schedule,” he explained. “I’ve managed to lift 130 kilograms with the injured leg and I’m pushing myself every day.”
Confident of Return to Football
Despite the trauma, Antonio remains focused on his comeback. “I’m 100 percent sure I’ll be back on the pitch. That’s my goal and I’m working hard for it,” he added.
Support from West Ham and Mental Health Struggles
Antonio thanked West Ham United for their unwavering support through his recovery. He also admitted struggling mentally, especially after the managerial change from Julen Lopetegui to Graham Potter in January. “I didn’t want to rush my return just to impress the new manager while I’m still not fully fit,” he said. “That wouldn’t help me or the team.”
‘I Felt Embarrassed’ – Antonio on Crash Impact
As West Ham’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League, Antonio said he felt deep embarrassment over the severity of the crash. “It was so bad, I was just embarrassed,” he admitted. “Physically I’m healing well, but mentally, trauma doesn’t go away easily.”
Focused on Recovery and Staying Strong
Antonio concluded by highlighting the importance of patience and mental strength in his recovery journey. “There will be tough moments. Trauma takes time to heal, but I’m staying focused on getting back stronger.”
