Pakistan Faces Major Setback Ahead of Champions Trophy 2025

by aishwarya

With just over two weeks remaining until the Champions Trophy 2025, hosts Pakistan have suffered a significant blow as young opener Saim Ayub has been ruled out of the tournament. However, the team has announced the return of veteran opener Fakhar Zaman, adding much-needed experience at the top. Ayub’s absence might push Babar Azam into an opener’s role, a move that has sparked discussions among cricket experts.

Babar Azam’s Role Under the Scanner

In response to the situation, former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has suggested that if Babar fails as an opener, he will have an explanation ready.

“Babar’s position in the team remains secure, no matter how he performs in the Champions Trophy,” – Basit Ali stated on his YouTube channel.

“I hope he delivers. If he does well, he will say ‘I played for Pakistan.’ If he struggles, he will claim he was forced to open,” he added.

Despite limited ODI appearances in 2024, Babar showcased his class, scoring 228 runs in six matches at an impressive average of 57.

Pakistan has been in exceptional form in ODIs, securing consecutive series victories in Australia and South Africa under the leadership of new white-ball captain Mohammad Rizwan. This momentum will be crucial as they head into the tournament.
